چکیده

Minimal change nephropathy (MCN) is characterised by the development of nephrotic syndrome in the absence of histological changes on light microscopy or immune complex deposition on immunofluorescence. Ultrastructural examination typically reveals diffuse epithelial foot process effacement. In children under 10 MCN accounts for up to 90% of those presenting with the nephrotic syndrome1. Paediatric nephrologists, therefore, reserve renal biopsy for patients with atypical clinical features or those who fail to respond to first line treatment. MCN becomes progressively less common as a cause of nephrotic syndrome through adolescence. In adults, 10 -30% of those with nephrotic syndrome are subsequently shown to have MCN2;3. In our own centre, which serves a population of around one million individuals, 173 patients have had a renal biopsy after developing nephrotic syndrome in the last six years. In this population of adult patients MCN was the third commonest diagnosis (13%) after focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) (15%) and membranous nephropathy (34%). PATHOGENESIS

The clinical relevance: The assessment of the antigenicity of an injectable molecule for the human organism requires human patient sera due to the inherent variability of antibodies from person to person, and the inherent variation of bioactivity of antibodies within a single individual. Antibodies produced experimentally in animals give little information with regard to clinical effects of the...

We describe the case of a renal transplant recipient who presented with malaise, dry cough, severe weight loss, abdominal pain and watery diarrhoea. The laboratory workup revealed anaemia and elevated C reactive protein. Chest X-ray showed bilateral reticulonodular infiltrates, and computed tomography scan of the chest and abdomen revealed diffuse thickening of the interand intralobular septs, ...

There is a dearth of information on the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) in Nigeria. Earlier studies in the tropical developing countries have reported either the rarity or very low prevalence of this disease and more importantly as a cause of renal failure, but there are hardly any such studies focussing on the pattern of APKD in renal disease p...

Background: Although vascular access is essential for adequate haemodialysis delivery, the systematic use of a patient's venous patrimony may eventually lead to exhaustion of suitable sites for placement of a new vascular access. Case Report: We present two cases of such patients. In the first one we inserted a 55cm catheter through the left external iliac vein, and a 40cm translumbar catheter ...

Introduction: Urolithiasis is rare in developed countries. Staghorn calculi are a type of upper urinary tract stone that involves the renal pelvis and extends into at least two calyces. Although all types of urinary stones can potentially form staghorn calculi, approximately 75% are composed of a struvite matrix and are generally associated with urinary tract infection caused by urea -splitting...
